After Hour Pediatric Care for Your Child

You help Tommy out of the bathtub, towel dry his hair and go in for a quick kiss on the forehead like every other night. Wait. Is that a fever? Now you go in for the mom-thermometer kiss to the temple. Yep. That's definitely a fever in the little boy who picked at his dinner but seemed himself all day...maybe a little sluggish now that you think about it. And he didn't ask for his normal evening snack. Uh-oh. You ask if anything hurts and the reply is "my ear".

As a mother of two, both prone to ear infections, I've been in this position way too many times. With my son, I would be lucky to catch an ear infection this early in the evening. I would typically be wakened with cries at 3 AM. That's not fun for anyone. And could I get after hour pediatric care for my almost 2 year old? Yes, but that meant going to the ER which was a 20 minute drive and let's not even talk about the wait time after we arrived.

Due to after hour pediatric care being very inconvenient for my little one I learned the tricks of warm compresses and rotating Tylenol and Motrin. Even so, this would only buy me another 3 hours of sleep. Not only would the ear infection would have him up in pain again, but there still wouldn't be much else I could do for him. I had always wished I could talk to a doctor right then and there. This was so I could have daddy run to the 24 hour pharmacy to pick up antibiotics to start working on the infection right away.

Our insurance plan didn't include anything in regards to telemedicine. Our hospital system did but it was only during specified hours and they wouldn't provide care to children under 24 months. Therefore, I would have to play the tiresome waiting game. Wait until morning to call the pediatrician, wait on hold to get an appointment, wait until the appointment time, wait in the waiting room...and so on and so on. If only someone out there would provide late night medical attention for my child. If we could only be so lucky.

Thankfully, my family found a solution. Telemedicine! One of my friends kids was sick and she had mentioned that she talked to the doctor over video chat on the computer. Wait! What?!!? This is a thing? Of course I had to know more about this sorcery! She told me about all the advantages of I Call the Doc and how amazing telemedicine has been for her family. I was sure she was going to tell me I was going to have to pay an arm and a leg for this type of convenience. However, I was wrong. Way wrong! The cost for this convenience was beyond affordable. I was sure there was going to be a catch but I am still yet to find one. The doctors are fantastic, there's barely a wait time and no one has to go out in the cold. The best part? Anyone in our family can receive care when needed. We still see our regular physicians, as we should, but I Call the Doc has truly been a blessing for our household.
